Bora Bora – undeniably the most mythical of the Pacific islands

Bora Bora

Bora Bora

Bora Bora has been claimed by honeymooners and romantics from all around the world. The sky above its crystal lagoon is touched by the castle like Mount Otemanu. The unique overwater bungalows contribute to the one of a kind environment. While the motu covered with palm trees circles the lagoon like a necklace, fertile tropical slopes and valleys blossom with Hibiscus. The wonderful white-sand beaches are washed by emerald waters where unbelievably colored fish inhibit the coral reefs. It’s been written so much about this place but still it’s unbearably hard to find the words to describe its magic.

Motu Mute airport was built in 1942 by the US military forces. It is located on the tiny Motu Mute about 20min on boat from the main village – Vaitape, on the opposite side of the island. Other remains of the US military are seven giant cannons mounted during the WWII. Some of them are so well hidden in the lush hills overlooking the lagoon that are impossible to find without help. The view of the island from the motu is stunning. While traveling across the amazing lagoon one soon understands it is the main main attraction to most visitors.

The island itself is rather small and can be circled by car in an hour. Covering area three times the size of the land mass the lagoon offers the full range of shades of blue and turquoise. To its southwest is the Coral Garden. It is a natural underwater park where all kinds of tropical fish and corals live.

Pointe Matira

Off the Point Matira there is a spot where the giant manta rays gather together and one could enjoy their graceful dance. Of course there are other types of ray, too. The beautiful spotted ray and the friendly gray ray love to be petted during “ray feeding” excursions. At the entrance of the pass, the “White valley” teems with gray sharks and barracudas in a never ending ballet.

Most of the temples – Marae have been destroyed during the last century by the English missionaries. There are few of them nowhere near as impressive as they are on Raiatea, Huahine, or Tahiti. One can find several of them by simply driving around the island by car or scooter. The best ones are in plain view of the coastal road and one can easily stop for a look.
